Summary

Under direct supervision of the vocational teacher and the Boys Ranch Program Manager, the Educational Assistant and Resident Monitor (EA/RM) will serve as a primary assistant in the year-round academic program. The EA/RM will work in collaboration with the Boys Ranch and the Program Manager. The classroom serves as a mechanism to prepare students academically and socially for success in their next school or work setting. Outside the classroom, the EA/RM is responsible for the security, safety and supervision of residents through direct monitoring, active interaction and clear communication. This position is 9:00-5:00 M-F with increased hours occasionally for meetings, training and floor supervision. Schedule can vary to include swing shifts, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.  

Duties

  • Collaborate with assigned school staff to supervise students and maintain a safe and secure classroom environment
  • Maintain a positive, cooperative attitude and demeanor
  • Provide primary support to the teacher with instruction to students on a daily basis
  • Maintain effective communication with students and staff
  • Assess student performance through use of observation and assessments directed by the teacher
  • Community outreach to establish relationships with community partners that provide enrichment opportunities to the vocational program
  • Maintain safety, security, and supervision by providing continuous direct visual supervision of the youth and the milieu.
  • Oversee daily activities including guiding youth through the daily routine, identifying and promoting strengths, enforcing guidelines and expectations, holding youth accountable through the token economy, and reporting treatment concerns to Case Managers, Program Managers, and Program Directors as necessary.
  • Provide active supervision, interaction, and engagement with the residents
  • Model appropriate, prosocial behaviors
  • Establish positive rapport with youth by guiding behaviors
  • Timely documentation of daily log, comment cards, and behaviors.
  • Conduct searches of resident’s personal belongings and personal areas.
  • Prepare to utilize CPI interventions to manage residents’ behaviors.
  • Provide immediate responses and interventions to youth in crisis.
  • Support the positive potential of each youth acknowledge pro-social behaviors.
  • Maintain awareness of the resident’s case plan and commitment offense (s) and that interactions are consistent with their short term goals and treatment plans. 
  • During night shift, make periodic surveillance rounds of facility and check on residents at least every one-half (1/2) hour, waking of residents
  • Transportation of resident (doctor appointments & activities)
  • Assist with preparation of meals
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled
  • Other duties as requested by Program Manager, Treatment Manager or Supervisor

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Ability: Ability to work with a diverse student population in individual and group settings.  Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and to be a flexible, cooperative, collaborative, and effective member of a professional team.  General knowledge of middle/ high school level academic subjects, with vocational and/or trade skills preferred. Competency with computers and educational learning programs. Will be expected to become familiar with current treatment model on site.  
  • Experience and Training:  Minimally, AA degree from an accredited college. BA and/or Alternative education background preferred.  CPR/1st Aid certification required.
  • Physical Requirements: While performing the duties for the job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee occasionally is required to use hands or finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
