Math and Science Teacher

J Bar J Learning Centers is education services for students between the ages of 13-18.  J Bar J Learning Centers is accredited by Cognia and is registered with the Oregon Dept. of Education as a private alternative program. The campus is located in Bend. The students reside on site and receive their therapeutic treatment and academic instruction on campus.  Our educational program serves as a mechanism to prepare students academically, behaviorally, and socially for success in their next school or work setting. 

Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Academic Director, the classroom teacher will serve as a primary instructor teaching high school math, science and other elective courses as assigned. The instruction model of the classroom is project based as well as proficiency based. Opportunities for professional growth in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Duties

  • Provide primary instruction to students on a daily basis
  • Develop lesson plan for the implementation of approved curriculum
  • Regularly assess and document student performance
  • Write curriculum guides for courses taught and align with state standards
  • Maintain education plans and student portfolios
  • Utilize innovative materials and strategies in daily instructional milieu
  • Maintain a positive, cooperative attitude and demeanor
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents and staff
  • Assist with School Improvement process
  • Perform other duties as requested

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills and Ability:   Knowledge of secondary mainstream and remedial curriculum theory and teaching practices.  Ability to develop curriculum, including goals and measures of assessment. Ability to develop lesson plans, provide instruction and evaluate student performance.  Knowledge of standard-based and project-based learning.  Ability to work with a diverse student population in individual and group settings.  Knowledge of current educational theory as it relates to alternative education. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.  Must be a cooperative and effective member of a professional team.  Must be technology literate.
  • Experience and Training:  B.A./B.S. from an accredited four year college or university;  M.A./M.S.  degree preferred.  Oregon teaching license required.  Valid Oregon Driver’s License. Alternative education background and/or Special Education endorsement preferred. Valid Oregon driver license and CPR/1st Aid certification required.
  • Physical Requirements: While performing the duties for the job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee occasionally is required to use hands or finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
